Shum Chung Wong Ip

April 9, 1929 — March 28, 2024

With both heavy and grateful hearts, we bid farewell to Shum Chung Wong Ip, who passed peacefully on March 28, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on April 9th, 1929 in a small Chinese village, Shum Ip would become an entrepreneur, cofounding the International Noodle Company in 1979 in Michigan, and later would become the matriarch to a loving family. She immigrated to the United States on March 10, 1977, arriving in San Francisco and later making her home in Michigan with her husband Chuen Ip, and her two children Robert Ip and Tony Ip.

After her husband’s passing in 1981 she survived with her dedicated children, becoming the beloved matriarch of the family. She was a proud mother through her son Robert Ip and his wife Qiqi Deng, and Tony Ip alongside his wife, Manyi Chen-Ip, and a proud grandmother with her five grandchildren: Victor Ip and Valen Ip, sons of Robert Ip; and Eric Ip, Sarah Ip, and Seline Ip, children of Tony Ip and Manyi-Chen-Ip. Each of her grandchildren holds a special place in her heart with her grandchildren cherishing her imparted comfort, wisdom, and deep love for them.

Shum Ip’s legacy is not only immortalized through her entrepreneurial achievements but also in the tender, loving moments shared with her family. Her eldest granddaughter, Sarah Ip, fondly recalls a night when, scared of the dark, her grandmother assured Sarah of her safety promising to protect her every night and reminding her that she was only a few steps away. Sarah remembers her grandmother Shum Ip being stubborn but tough, strong, and over everything, caring, making sure she was always healthy and happy.

Victor Ip, Robert Ip’s eldest son, recalls similar nights to his cousin Sarah. Reminiscing the times when he was too afraid to sleep, Shum Ip would stay up with him, creating an air of comfort and peace. She would make sure he was well fed and protected until his father Robert Ip would get back from work (Often giving him an earful).

Shum Ip’s youngest grandson Valen Ip recalls Shum Ip’s intelligence and compassion. On nights when he struggled with homework, his grandmother would stay up with him, supporting him throughout his work and encouraging him through his progress. Many times he would look towards his grandma for confirmation of his work and fondly remembers her thumbs up for all his correct answers (even though he also recalls still getting them wrong).

Seline Ip, Shum Ip’s youngest granddaughter, admired her grandmother’s dedication and willingness to always keep moving, especially when it involved work. Shum Ip’s dedication and commitment to always working became a testament to who she was since she was born.

Eric Ip, Shum Ip's eldest grandson, cherishes memories of his grandmother's nurturing presence, from sharing meals to the comforting rituals of bedtime, reminding him of her love and care.

Robert Ip, her eldest son, recalls mornings being greeted with a cup of coffee his mother prepared for him. A tradition created from her love and care, acknowledging his hard work and early mornings. Many times she did not have to wake up but this tradition held, authenticating her care and understanding of her own family.

Tony Ip, her youngest son, parallels the family’s sentiment, remembering his mom as compassionate with a nurturing heart.

Shum Ip's life was a testament to strength, resilience, and boundless love. From her heritage in China to her thriving legacy in Michigan, she touched the lives of many with her unwavering support, and her endless capacity for love.
