Duane Clegg

April 28, 1936 — December 15, 2023

Duane L. Clegg Westland, Michigan Duane Leroy Clegg, age 87, passed away December 15, 2023. He passed away peacefully at Angela Hospice, and after time with his family by his side. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Donna Clegg; his sons, Chris (Catherine) Clegg; Scott (Kotomi) Clegg,Todd (Andrea) Clegg; grandchildren, Lane (Jacob) Current and Paige (Andrew) Klooster, Alex and Lauren Clegg, Kyle and Rye Clegg; three great-grandchildren, Harper Klooster, Joseph Current, and Lily Klooster; and brothers James (Gloria) Clegg and William (Linda) Clegg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Sophie Clegg; sisters Muriel and Joyce; and his beloved daughter, Jill Clegg. Duane was born in Pickford, Michigan on April 28, 1936, and grew up in Pickford, Michigan one of 5 children. As the oldest boy, he led a life of hard work beginning with working on his grandfather’s farm and working as a mechanic at the local garage. It was there where he found his passion for all things mechanical (especially trucks and engines) and soon he found there wasn’t anything he couldn’t build, rebuild, or fix! Shortly after he married his high school sweetheart, Donna, they headed downstate and settled in Brighton, Michigan. Duane worked as a mechanic at Cummins and also started a milk route. Through hard work and persistence, Duane and Donna founded a group of family businesses – D&D agency, DLC Trucking, and Chief’s Trucking. Over the years, he acquired a fleet of trucks and built his own fleet of trailers to haul sea containers throughout Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. Known to those in the trucking industry as “Chief”, he built a reputation for high-quality and dependable service to customers and was a recognized expert in the industry when it came to helping others with their equipment or any other difficult problem they may face. Duane also had a lifelong love of the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing and birdwatching. If he had any free time at all, you could find him tinkering on his boat, planning his next expedition, or simply sitting on his deck watching the birds. Husband, Father, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, he was so loved by his family. We will miss him dearly, but we are so grateful for our time with him. He was a model of hard work and caring for a family. May he rest in peace. The family has chosen to celebrate Duane’s life privately.
