Edith Carroll Hardy (aka “Tootie”) was born at home in Victoria, VA to Theodore Benjamin Hardy, Jr. and Edith Gray Fuqua Hardy on February 15, 1928. Carroll loved growing up on her parent’s beautiful 550 acre farm, working with the farm animals, especially her “Lambie Pie,” and playing outside with her four brothers. She was a strong and hearty individual for most of her life and attributed that to her hard work living on the farm. She made fitness a priority and walked five miles a day into her late eighties.
Carroll put her faith in Jesus Christ and asked Him to be her Savior at the age of twelve. She had a servant heart and a warm, gentle and helpful personality. Carroll always said she learned to talk with all kinds of people by working in her father’s general store. She had a sweet Southern manner, was kind and gracious. Carroll was an extraordinary person, at once self reliant and soft spoken; sweet and quick witted. She had a charming and contagious sense of humor.
Carroll’s love of music began at an early age. She took violin and piano lessons from her Aunt Dot and played at various venues throughout high school. As an adult, she was active in many church choirs. In their forties, Carroll and her friend Betty sang duets at churches and civic functions. They enjoyed performing in matching costumes and harmonizing. Carroll taught herself to play the harmonica and would pull it out to play whenever the spirit led. She memorized her favorite piano pieces and played them daily.
Carroll and Bill grew up knowing each other in the small town of Victoria, Virginia. Bill visited the store where Carroll worked on the pretense of buying something, and they soon began to date. After high school graduation, Carroll attended two years at Radford College, majoring in violin performance. After WW II, Bill returned home to attend college nearby and their love continued to deepen. They were married on June 26, 1948 in Victoria, and remained married for over 70 years. They were able to celebrate their silver and golden wedding anniversaries with their children and grandchildren.
Carroll was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, who served her family well with her effervescent social skills and thoughtfulness. After moving from Michigan to Texas, she recorded hundreds of individualized “Grandmother Carroll tapes” for her grandchildren. She read books, sang songs and related anecdotes. She also loved writing cards and letters, remembering birthdays, anniversaries, etc. of so many family and friends. She enjoyed both making and receiving phone calls.
Carroll had a deep love for America, so much so that the United States flag was featured prominently in her Katy, Texas home decor. Celebrating all things red, white and blue, she was often seen wearing these colors, and many of the gifts given to her followed this theme. She made a point to shake the hands of many veterans, policemen, firefighters, and other public servants to thank them for their service.
Carroll is predeceased by her husband William C. Morgan, brothers Earl Hardy, Harold Hardy, and Keith Hardy. She is survived by her brother Donnie Hardy; children Dona (Mark) Olson, Kerry (Lisa) Morgan, Kathy (Dale) Begian; grandchildren Chris Olson (Audrey), Michael Olson (Rachel), Peter Olson (Jackie); Daniel Morgan (Danielle), Jeremy Morgan, Alexander Morgan, Larissa Morgan, Katarina Morgan; Christina Begian Schwab (Ted), Sara Begian; great-grandchildren Annabelle Olson, Gwendolyn Olson, Clara Olson; Evangeline Olson, Violet Olson; Octavia Morgan, Constantine Morgan, Bjorn Morgan; Kate Schwab, and many loving friends and extended family.
