Shirley Ann Schultz, 89, of Livonia, Michigan passed away peacefully on June 30, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Shirley was born on August 9, 1934, to Claude and Alpha Liley in Lutesville, Missouri. The family settled in Flint, Michigan where she was raised. After graduating from Flint Northern in 1952, she studied nursing at Nazareth College in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Shirley’s calling in life was to serve others. In 1953, Shirley was in the midst of clinical training when she met the love of her life, Clarence Schultz. They wed on June 12, 1954, going on to have eight children: David Schultz, Laurie Feldkamp, Judy Burkman, Nancy Mastalerz, Mary Schultz, Paul Schultz, Ann Maguire, and Eric Schultz.
Shirley loved children and embraced motherhood. Once married Shirley transitioned away from her nursing ambitions and dedicated her life to her growing family. Shirley garnered the greatest joy in life from seeing those around her excel and flourish. Through her genuine and endless kindness, she blessed her family, friends, and acquaintances with happiness. She never wavered in placing service to others above herself. It came naturally to her. It was what she was all about. Whether supporting a friend, neighbor, or church member through difficulty or supporting her family and children pursuing their passions, she made it her mission to improve the lives of others.
Wherever Shirley found herself, she would frequently migrate to the kitchen to lend a hand. Her family will carry lasting and fond memories of Shirley happily humming while she was busy cooking or cleaning up after a meal. She had many diverse and wide-ranging interests. She was well-read, with a high intellect, and of the highest moral character. She enjoyed being active and was an avid snow skier and tennis player. She also liked to knit and was a crossword puzzle whiz. Shirley had a profound influence on the success and lives of her children. She was the fixer, the do-er, the enforcer, and always an empathetic shoulder to lean on. For her children, she was simply “Mom”. She was a wonderful parenting role model with her humble, consistent, and “others first” approach. We will miss her greatly.
Of her immediate family, Shirley was predeceased by her parents, her husband Clarence Schultz, and grandson Patrick Maguire. In addition, she was preceded in death by sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and William Angst; sister, Patricia Norris; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Betsy Liley; and brother-in-law, Dr. Don Bradley. She is survived by her eight children, 19 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren, sister Marilyn Bradley and brother-in-law Donald Schultz, who carry her legacy in their hearts.
