Robert Walkowiak

Dr. Robert G. Walkowiak, Sr. and Mary Jane (Millard) Formerly of Detroit and Rochester, Bob passed away at age 93 on April 23, 2014. He graduated from Wayne University (now Wayne State University) in 1941 and from Wayne University School of Medicine in 1944. He served in the Navy during World War II as a physician aboard the U.S.S. Topeka. After his military service, Bob returned to Detroit and began his medical practice, eventually serving as the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Detroit Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Detroit as well as at St. Francis Hospital in Hamtramck. A religious man with a love of medicine, Bob served as a medical advisor to the Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit, as the President of the Michigan Society of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and as a clinical instructor at Wayne State University School of Medicine. In retirement, he provided pro bono medical services to various Native American communities across the country. He enjoyed traveling abroad with his wife, Mary Jane. They loved touring China, Egypt, Australia, and British Isles. Mary Jane, his wife of 67 years, preceded him in death at age of 89 on April 9, 2013. She was born in Saginaw, Michigan and attended the University of Michigan where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Mary Jane was a loving mother to her six children. Bob and Mary Jane were preceded in death by their sons David, Jeffrey and James. They are survived by three children, Rebecca (Whalin) of Canton, Robert Jr. of Canton, and Peter of Tallahassee as well as by Mary Jane's sister, Helen Jean Millard of Tucson, and by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
