Robert Louis Stevenson

November 15, 1934 — October 30, 2024

Robert Louis Stevenson, 89, of Plymouth, went to be with the Lord on October 30, 2024. In his peaceful last days, he was surrounded by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Darlene and grandson Logan Lundy. Bob will be dearly missed by his children: Robert (Jill), Lori (Jim) Lundy, Linda (Mark) Mitchell and grandchildren: Nick (Chelsie) Stevenson, Jonathan Lundy, Kendall Stevenson, Anna Mitchell, and Ellie (Carlos) Saints. He is also survived by his sister Anne Varney, nieces Susan and Jill, nephew Rick, and countless friends.

Bob was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. All of our lives were enriched by his love, guidance, kindness, and attention. He was well liked, generous, a good story teller, and made friends easily. His grandson once said, “Papa, you talk to everyone!”

Bob worked most of his life as a millwright at Jones & Laughlin Steel. After the mill closed, he installed shutters for The Shutter Shop.

Bob was an active man. His hobbies and associations were many. He and Darlene loved music. In their earlier years, he played guitar and Darlene played autoharp with the Detroit Folklore Society.  He continued to play throughout his life.

Bob was also an avid dirt bike rider. For many years our family went up north on most summer weekends to camp and ride. The highlight of many of these weekends was sitting around the campfire while Bob and Darlene sang and played, with others joining in or just enjoying the music.

Bob enjoyed going to the gun range and teaching people to shoot, especially his granddaughters. He was a regular at Planet Fitness. He inspired all of us. Bob loved old westerns which he watched many, many times despite his family’s groans!! Bob took great pride in caring for his house and grounds. He spent much of the summer weeding Darlene’s gardens, an act of devotion which continued even after she passed.

Bob was a lifelong car enthusiast. The high point was his involvement with Jaguars and the Jaguar Affiliates Group of Michigan (JAGM). He restored 2 vintage 60’s E-Types. Both were awarded numerous first place finishes at car shows nationally. He became recognized throughout the United States as an expert in Jaguar E-Type authenticity. For many years Bob was the President of the JAGM as well as the Head Judge at the Michigan annual Concours d’Elegance. In 2011, Bob was awarded the prestigious Andrew J.A. Whyte Award by the Jaguar Clubs of North America for his dedication, leadership, service and contribution to the Jaguar Club.

Next to God, family, friends, and the church, Bob loved the USA. The national colors were always on display at his house. He was an early and proud member of the Tea Party. In election season, Bob could often be found on a street corner with a sign for his candidate. Bob was particularly proud of his Marine grandson Nick. He attended Nick’s graduation from Boot Camp at Paris Island, S.C. and often wore shirts with the Marine Corps emblem or a patriotic message.

Bob and Darlene were devoted members of Bell Creek Community Church. They volunteered as greeters and spent countless hours helping refurbish the church building.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at Bell Creek Community Church on Saturday, November 30th, 2024. Visitation at 11:00 and Memorial Service at 1:00 pm.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.  John 3:16
