Richard A. Joyner, Jr.

July 28, 1918 — April 3, 2011

Richard Audrey Joyner, Jr. The oldest of the four children of Richard Sr. and Mary Sue Thorne Joyner, Richard was born in Farmville North Carolina. In 1939 he graduated from the University of North Carolina with a BS-Commerce and started what was to become a 42-year career with the Burroughs Corporation (Unisys), working in North Carolina, Georgia and Detroit where he moved to the corporate home office in 1960. He retired in 1981. During his youth and prior to Michigan, Richard was active in the Methodist Church. He continued his church involvement in Michigan by becoming an active member of Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deacon, a Ruling Elder for three terms and several years as Clerk of Session. Immediately following Pearl Harbor he entered the United States Army Signal Corps, serving at Camp Kohler in Sacramento, California and in the Pacific in Manila. While stationed in California he met his wife Geraldine Wood of Patterson. They married in 1947 moving to Raleigh. Their family grew to include sons Richard William and Robert Wood. In January 1960 the young growing community of Livonia became the home of the Joyner family. Richard became a Director of the Junior Football League and active in his sons’ Boy Scout Troop. For 25 years he prepared income tax returns for senior citizens. For nearly 20 years he was a member of the City of Livonia Public Library Commission. He was an avid reader and lover of books. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Clara Sue, brothers Joseph Dock and John Russell, and his wife of 63 years Geraldine Wood. He is survived by sons, Richard William Joyner of Livonia and Dr. Robert Wood Joyner of San Antonio, grandchildren Richard Paul Joyner of Hermosa Beach California, Jonathan Kuipers Joyner, Jason Robert Joyner and Kimberly Ann Joyner of San Antonio Texas. Richard lived by his belief that it is important to be a part of community activities—a good community is better with citizen participation.
