Age 86, Formerly of Dearborn.  Passed away peacefully on September 20, 2023

Murray was born in 1937 to Douglas and Luella (Nordahl) Bates in Traverse City. He graduated from Traverse City High School and Michigan State University, where he met his wife of 64 years, Audrey (Boyer) Bates. He is survived by his wife and their 4 children: Sally (Kevin) Foley, Michael (Gracie) Bates, Katherine (Jack) Wilkinson, and Thomas Bates; and 7 grandchildren: Craig and Rachel Wilkinson, Katie and Sheila Foley, Jean, Nick and Danny Bates.

He worked as a Work Coordinator at Fordson High School in Dearborn for 34 years and served as Treasurer for the Dearborn Federation of Teachers.   Murray was a devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions as well as MSU football and basketball.

A Gathering will be held at the R.G & G.R Harris Funeral Home, 15451 Farmington Rd, in Livonia, MI on Wednesday, September 27, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. An Internment gathering will be held in Acme Township (Traverse City) at a later date.
