LaVerne Obey (née Hale), 93, of Northville, MI, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025. Born on February 22, 1932, in Newberry, MI, she was the cherished daughter of Vernon G. Hale and Delia Hale. LaVerne was a beloved sister, preceded in death by her siblings, Robert Hale (Shirley) and Donna Leedke (Jim). She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Frank J. Obey (January 24, 1930 – April 25, 2016), with whom she will now be reunited in the eternal peace they both cherished.
As a bright and vibrant young woman, LaVerne was known for her athleticism and infectious spirit. As a cheerleader and figure skater at Newberry High School, she made lasting memories, earning admiration from friends and peers alike.
In the early 1950s LaVerne met the love of her life, Frank J. Obey, in Newberry, MI. Their connection was immediate, and on August 18, 1952, they married, began a family, and embarked on a beautiful sixty-four year journey together. In the early years of their marriage, LaVerne and Frank moved to several states, ultimately settling in Bay Village, OH, where they raised five children: Victoria L. Doehring, Rebecca J. Obey, Christopher J. Obey (Michelle), Jennifer A. Hartman, and Anthony H. Obey (Lisa). These children were the pride and joy of their lives.
LaVerne’s greatest joy came from her family, community, performing arts, and a love for cross word puzzles. She was a loving and devoted mother, active member of the community, worked at the local middle school, and a memorable character actor who performed in numerous stage plays w/I local community theaters. LaVerne poured her heart into everything she did and all those around her were blessed to witness the depth of her compassion and strength.
Later in life, LaVerne and Frank traveled the world together, visiting numerous countries and exploring every state in the United States. They shared an unwavering love, built on mutual respect, laughter, and countless cherished moments both at home and on their travels.
As a grandmother, LaVerne continued to shine. She was the proud grandmother of nine grandchildren: Andrew (Kelly), Alyssa, Alyson, Matthew (Melissa), Rachel, Ben, Brianna, Liz, and Abby. Each grandchild held a special place in her heart, and she reveled in watching them grow into their own unique and talented individuals. Her great-grandchildren: Adeline, Nathan, and Lucas brought her additional joy, and she treasured every moment she was able to spend with them.
LaVerne’s life was filled with love, laughter, and an unshakeable faith in the goodness of family. She had a gentle spirit, a quick wit, and a warmth that made everyone feel welcome. Her kindness extended beyond her immediate family—she was a friend to many and a pillar of support to all who knew her. Her legacy will be remembered for the way she lived with grace, compassion, and joy.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held in Newberry, MI, on July 19, 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation ( www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org) in LaVerne’s honor.
LaVerne will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her legacy of love, strength, and unwavering devotion will live on through her family and the countless lives she touched.
