Joseph Hutnik

December 25, 1926 — September 8, 2019

Hutnik, Joseph Age 92. September 8, 2019. Sergeant, USAAF, WWII veteran. Beloved husband of the late Ethel Hutnik for 68 years. Loving father of Douglas, Karen Reistroffer (Doug) Gary (Julia), Susan Melvin (the late Paul), and JoAnn. Dear grandfather of Evan, Stephanie, Liam, Christian and Lauren. Sgt. Joe, grew up in Detroit, one of 4 children, and graduated from Chadsey High School. He proudly served in the Army-Air Force in Germany during WWII. He met Ethel in Detroit, married her in 1948, started a family and moved to Garden City in 1956. He lived in the same house for 63 years. Joe worked in the Detroit area as a lithographer in the printing industry for over 40 years. He was a volunteer reserve police officer for 33 years in the Garden City Police Department and for a time, a volunteer at Garden City Hospital as a cancer survivor himself. He really enjoyed family life, gardening and cooking. Friends and family can attest to enjoying many delicious meals that he prepared with our mother. Homemade pierogis and stuffed cabbages, kielbasa and sauerkraut, city chicken, and not to forget- tacos, were always a big hit. As a lifelong outdoorsman and sports enthusiast, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball, racquetball, and football. A real inspiration, he pursued bicycling, golf and marathons in his sixties. We will miss you, Dad- your sense of humor, your endless energy, your love and your care. He chose this for his wife’s headstone “Forever with God, Ethel and Joseph”. And so, they are together again.
