Joan Jurczyszyn

May 29, 1936 — December 31, 2022

Joan Ann “Snookie” Jurczyszyn, 86, of Livonia passed away peacefully at home on December 31, 2022.

Joan was born on May 29, 1936 to Virginia and Edward Gdula in Hamtramck, MI.  She lived in a bungalow below her Polish born grandparents with her parents and two sisters. She attended parochial school at St. Ladislaus, Hamtramck.  After she graduated high school in 1955, she attended the University of Detroit for a year.

In 1959, Joan married her husband, Bob, in a large Polish wedding at St Lads.  Shortly after, they started a family having 5 kids in 6 years between 1960 and 1966. She was a stay-at-home mom until the early 1970s when she went to work once the kids were in school full time.  She was a keypunch operator and an office manager at a small company for almost 20 years.

While Joan might not have an extensive professional career, she exceeded in a career as a mom.

Joan never looked for attention and was unshakable in her beliefs.  She was passionate in everything from family values, church or politics and a strong defender of her kids and grandkids. She was not phony, and you knew were she stood on topics but never tried to force her opinions upon you.

A home body and avid reader, Joan was addicted to English murder mysteries.  She loved attending her kid’s sporting events. She was a diehard Detroit Tigers/Lions fan but enjoyed watching all sports especially with a can of Diet Coke and a couple of pieces of chocolate next to her.

Joan hosted many family functions including Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas Tree parties.  She loved activities with her family including weekend trips to the cottage, summer vacations in their pop-up camper, visiting minor league baseball games, cutting down the Christmas tree, attending annual Memorial Day picnics and traveling the U.S..  She was so proud of her Polish heritage and taught all her kids/grandkids/friends the art of making the correct pierogi at Easter/Christmas time.

Family meant everything to Joan.  Her spunkiness and lively personality made her a hit at every party.  Her warmth was felt by everyone she met. Her selflessness and generosity highlighted her personality. She excelled at raising five successful kids that are eternal grateful that she was their mom.

Beloved wife of Robert C. Jurczyszyn for 63 years.  Cherished mother of Robert C. (Sue), Rebecca C. (Paul Stelmaszek) Jurczyszyn, Deborah J. Maresh, Matthew J. (Sue) and the late Christopher E. Jurczyszyn.  Loving grandmother to 11 beautiful grandchildren and great grandmother to 4.  Joan will be greatly missed.
