Fernon P. Feenstra

May 31, 1935 — April 16, 2014

Fernon P. Feenstra Age 78, died peacefully April 16, 2014. After a long courageous fight with cancer, Fernon passed away surrounded by family early afternoon April 16th. He was born and raised in the Grand Haven area of west Michigan. Fernon joined the US Navy and fought in the Korean War, serving on the USS Floyd B. Parks. Attended Western Michigan and U of M, on his way to becoming a Master Electrician. In 1957 he married Barbara and started a family. He moved from Milwaukee to Livonia, MI to start a new career at Schoolcraft College at its founding in 1964. He began as a teacher and advanced to Associate Dean of Applied Sciences and retired as Head of the Culinary Arts Program. Fernon was an active member in the Livonia community having served on the ZBA, the Livonia Spree Committee, as well as 14 years on the City Council. The Livonia Anniversary Committee, Kiwanis Early Risers, Jaycees, Livonia Hockey Association and the YMCA Indian Guides, are other areas Fernon spent his time giving back to the community. Most notably he was the driving force behind the Veterans Memorial Wall at Farmington and Five Mile. Fernon was passionate about recognizing and honoring all those men and women who served our country. This is clearly evident at the memorial as well as in City Hall itself. He was named Citizen of the Year in 2007. Fernon was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, son Matthew, son-in-law Art Trost and parents Karel and Katherine Feenstra. He is survived by his children, Jeni (Rich), Kelly (Cheryl), Leigh(Thomas), Tracy, Dan(Kathy) and Kristen(Dino); grandchildren, Arthur, Chelsea, Cory, Alyson, Karely, Nick, Andrew, Reid and Grant; sister Eldonna, and brothers, Karvel, Norlon, and Larry. His visitation will be held at the R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Home, 15451 Farmington Rd., Livonia, Friday 5 - 8 p.m. and Saturday from 1 - 8 p.m. He will be Instate at St. Aidan Catholic Church, 17500 Farmington Rd., Livonia, Tuesday from 11 a.m. until his Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Kiwanis Club of Livonia Early Risers, 11764 Newburgh Rd, Livonia, Michigan 48150.
