Charles (nicknames “Cecil” and “Chuck”) Edward Jackson, 94, was born April 22, 1926 in Marietta, Georgia to Thomas Edward Jackson and Florrie Mae (Hill) Jackson. He was the oldest of two children. He completed his public education at the age of 16, graduating from Marietta High School. He moved to Harlem, New York to attend dental school. Always the family man, Chuck returned to Marietta without completing dental school to take care of his ailing Mother. After she passed, Chuck migrated to Detroit and worked at the Ford Motor Company and the United States Post Office. He ultimately accepted employment with the City of Detroit’s Water Department beginning his 32-year career as a Delinquent Water Bill Collector and retiring as the Personnel Director. Chuck was passionate about education. While working, he attended night school at the University of Detroit to earn his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration, receiving it at age 51. He did not stop there – he earned a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Wayne State University at age 64. Afterwards, he earned several counseling certificates, including, but not limited to, Gambling Addiction and Gerontology. He worked for several years with the Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University as an Office Assistant. He was passionate about his community. He was a member of the Albany Block Club, Boy Scouts and Osborn High School’s Booster Club. He was a union member of AFSCME Local 735 during his working years, remaining active in retirement with both the AFSCME Retiree Sub Chapter #98 and Detroit Retired City Employees Association (DRCEA). He also served as Treasurer for both the Krainz Woods Neighborhood Organization and Wayne State’s Organization of Black Alumni (OBA). Above all else, Chuck was a family man. He married Evelyn Mercedes Robinson on January 10, 1954. They were married for 29 years. To their union three children were born: Kevin, Kyle, and Kyra. He enjoyed visiting his extended family with his wife and children, as well as traveling, attending basketball games, picture and video taking, and gardening. He also enjoyed Jazz music. He passed away from natural causes on June 27, 2020. He leaves to cherish his memories his sons, Kevin (Gayle) Jackson, Kyle (June) Jackson and daughter, Kyra (Robert) Kinney; grandchildren, Jaz Wright, Kyra (Alejo) Jackson-Sepulveda, Celeste Kinney, Juanita Jackson and Erika Jackson; step-grandchildren, Moria and Jonathan Swift, cousins, brothers and sisters in-laws, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his wife - Mercedes; sister - Etta Juanita (E.D.) Keith; and grandson - Robert Kinney, IV. Chuck’s requested memorial service will not be taking place at this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
